Detour to Dallas

Mike and I discovered that he will be clerking in Washington, DC for a wonderful Judge Griffith on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals during the years 2013-2014! Yes, that is far away. Attorneys and law people like to do things a decade in advance. DC is a place I've always wanted to visit, and now I will get to spend a whole year there! I'm very tempted to get a silly, part-time job so I can be a full-time tourist. Now there are only the dilemmas of what to do with Steadman, our beloved Buick. Do we take him? Leave him here? Sell him? Do we want to pay lots of rent and live in the city? Spend less and commute a lot? Can I handle a year without Sweet Tooth Fairy? All very good questions to consider. Good thing we have multiple years to consider this.

Part of my hearts wishes we could go straight to Dallas so that I can get a puppy, but this will be a very grand detour and will provide us with many exciting adventures.

In case you are wondering, and thought Mike graduated in April 2012, you are correct. There are several things we must do before we get to Dallas and become regular people. Here is a timeline for our lives:

April 2012: Graduate law school
August 2012: Clerk for Justice Lee at the Utah Supreme Court
August 2013: Clerk for Judge Griffith at the DC Circuit Court of Appeals
Probably August 2014: Go to Dallas where Mike will work and I will get a puppy.

I might as well tell you about my puppy dreams. I have always wanted a puppy. Mike - not so much. I have been working on him for years and he is slowly coming around. By the time we get to Dallas, he'll be just as excited as I am! I have read multiple dog training books to prepare myself so our puppy will be the best behaved dog ever. He is going to be a miniature goldendoodle (golden retriever/poodle mix) with wavy reddish fur. I have researched all of the puppy farms in America and have settled on the finest one in Alabama. His name will be Davey and I will LOVE him.

I will love DC too.

And Mike.

Who Shot JR?

I spent a month in Dallas over the summer. When I told anyone over 35 this, they immediately said, “Hey! Who shot JR!” Everyone then told me about this incredible 80’s TV series called Dallas with ridiculously rich people and ladies with very big hair who live out complicated lives. Supposedly, the coolest moment was when a mystery person shot an old, rich dude. I saw nothing like that while in Texas.

What I did see in Dallas was quite wonderful, nonetheless. Not only do they have the best fries on Earth (Katy Trail Ice House or Saint Anne’s) but it hardly ever snows there, they have fabulous shopping, the Dallas Mavericks and Blue Bell ice cream. Everyone there made a big deal about how glorious this particular ice cream is. I didn’t believe them at first. How good could a bucket of ice cream really be? Let me tell you, they weren’t joking. I consumed a carton of Rocky Road all by myself, minus one bowl Mike had, in three days. If you go, get some. You won’t be sad.

Mike sneakily caught me eating all the rest of our Blue Bell.

Another wonderful thing about Dallas was the lifestyle I lived while I was there. Wonderful Provo School District gives me a month off during the summer. I took those grand 4 weeks off while in Dallas, which meant I really didn’t have that much to do. My life consisted of sleeping in till 9 (or later), reading nearly a dozen books, running on the Katy Trail (no cars to hit or scare you), laying by the pool, shopping at giant malls, eating lots of Blue Bell, hunting for delicious cupcakes and cookies (Society Bakery and JD Chippery’s), pretty much doing whatever I wanted and attending Mike’s law firm parties. I think that describes the best life ever. I did that for a full month straight, and I still dream about it at night. Not only did I actually live this glorified life, but I also lived it with a washer, dryer and dishwasher, all fantasies of Wymount residents. There were times when I would wash a single shirt during the middle of the day, simply because I could and only had to walk 14 steps to do so. I never thought laundry could be such a grand novelty, but oh, it was.

The wonderful pool I would hang out at daily. People would often complain about the heat, but it really isn't that bad when you run around in a swimming suit during the afternoon. People need to figure that out.

Another fun part about Mike’s internship was the firm parties held at least weekly. Most were dinners or cocktail parties and a partner’s house (partner = big boss in law world), but some included Ranger’s games, tours of the Dallas Cowboy’s Stadium, plays, fancy steakhouse dinners, and some volunteer landscaping in a scary Dallas neighborhood. It was a month-long party for me.

My view from our 17th row seats. It was my first MLB game ever, and I loved every moment! The Rangers didn't play quite so well, but I didn't care. I had a blast! I'm going to become the greatest Rangers fan to ever live!

We went to the Rangers game 4 minutes after a long/wonderful day at Six Flags. Good thing I was wearing my red I Love Cupcakes shirt so I would fit in with the rest of the Rangers fans. That shirt fits any and all occasions.

Big place. Cool place.

This is me, in the Cowboys Stadium, laying in the exact same spot where I'm sure a several very famous football players have too. I was hoping some of their great athleticism would seep into me.

One not so awesome part was how sweaty I got when I exercised. Granted, I was outside running in 100 degree heat, but I would never have expected myself to get this incredibly sweaty. I wouldn’t consider my self an intensely sweaty person, but this was a normal-looking Dallas me after running. Weird. Please do not be grossed out by the pictures, it was just so astounding to me that I couldn't let it pass undocumented. I would also like you to notice the gigantic size of my bathroom mirror at this time. Also a Wymount novelty. Mike and I could get ready at the same time! So big! So much space! That’s just Texas for you, or any place other than Wymount.

Probably the best part about Dallas was that I got to see Mike so much. He’d come home around 7 every night. That may not sound so awesome, but compared to his schedule during school and in Salt Lake, it was like a second honeymoon. We had dinner together every night. It was usually at a partner’s house or we went out to eat (I only cooked twice the whole time – AWESOME), but it was wonderful to consistently see him each night for a whole evening. We usually did lame things together, like running on the beloved Katy Trail, watching Modern Family or getting heavenly Mango Pineapple Smoothies at McDonalds, but it was so wonderful just to be with him.

After his internship was finished, Mike was offered a job at his wonderful firm and he accepted! We are going to be real Dallasonians after graduation, and I couldn’t be more excited! I loved it down there! Hooray for Dallas. Hooray for Blue Bell! While I’m quite sure my life will be slightly different than the lazy one explained above, I still can’t wait to have wonderful adventures down there with Mike. Hooray!

The Sweet Tooth Fairy is in the Building

It has been ages since I last posted, and so much has happened, mainly wonderful trips to Dallas and others throughout Utah, but first I must post about an incredibly glorious event.

I just wanted to let you know that I met the owner of Sweet Tooth Fairy the other day. Some of you may know that my obsession with Sweet Tooth Fairy borders on the extreme, so as you can imagine, this was a red-letter day for me. I was in the neighborhood for a work errand and decided to get a cookie, of course. The Megan Faulkner Brown was there filming an audition video for Cupcake Wars. I asked the cashier girl if I could go talk to her and she said yes, like I was being a weirdo and Megan is just like any other person. Whatever, cashier girl. Like you know anything. I have been fan of Sweet Tooth Fairy longer than you've been out of high school.

So I went up to Megan and said I was one of her biggest fans. How I fell in love with STF four months after it opened years ago. I told her all of my favorite flavors and how her cupcakes have made my marriage so much better because Mike knows that he just needs to bring home a cupcake to make me so very happy no matter what has happened. I told her my husband just accepted a job in Dallas and that I the only reason I thought we maybe shouldn't go is because Sweet Tooth Fairy would not be there. Then she told me the greatest news of all. STF is building in PLANO! Plano is just a half hour away from Dallas. I got goosebumps all over and squealed for a minute straight.

It was like it was my birthday.

The guy filmed me talking to her and expressing my love for her divine confections. Then he asked if I would just talk for about 2 minutes straight about Sweet Tooth Fairy. It was hard to limit myself, but it was very fun. It was one of the best days of my life. Then guess what. The next day Megan asked ME to be her Facebook friend. I couldn't believe it. This is beyond anything I could have ever dreamed. Yay me! I love you, Sweet Tooth Fairy and Megan, who are one and the same!

Patrick and Redecorating

It has been quite a wonderful past few days. I got to visit Patrick on Friday. Patrick is my hair stylist. He is probably my favorite male person after Mike (of course), my dad, brothers and Stephen Wilkinson. I have only had one bad hair day since I started going to him a year ago, and that day wasn’t even his fault. I just hadn’t washed it in a really long time. Patrick somehow knows how to trim my bangs perfectly, which is quite the feat, as I am very picky about those 8 or 9 pieces of hair. Patrick is also loads of fun to talk to, which is very nice when you have to spend about an hour with someone. He changes his clothing style about every six months, which I find fascinating. Patrick is currently sporting a more ‘20s look, complete with mustache (which I used to find somewhat creepy while he was growing it out, but once you get to know Patrick, you will see he is not creepy at all) and permed, side-parted hair. Patrick is never dull.

I trust him to no end with my hair, which I care about inordinately. If he said we should do this or that with my hair I would say, “Patrick, you are beyond skilled, know what I like and know what is best. No need to ask. Just cut it.” A visit or two ago, Patrick and I had a 20 minute conversation about the gloriousness of cupcakes and where the best cupcakes shops are, who has the best frosting, best cake, best flavors, best cupcake shop atmosphere, etc. Well, it was mostly me telling him all of this and my theories about what makes a perfect cupcake because he hadn’t had one since he was 11. When I went for my appointment on Friday, guess what was waiting for me at Patrick’s spot. A coconut cupcake from Sweet Tooth Fairy, my favorite cupcake shop! Bless you, Patrick! I immediately squealed, gave him a hug and just stared at it, contemplating when and how I should eat it, while he snipped at my hair in his perfect way. If you are looking for a hair stylist, you will love Patrick. He’s at Shep Studio in Provo. Visit him and love your life and your hair. If Mike and I move to Dallas, I will be making quarterly trips to Provo to visit Patrick…and my family.

Another episode of funness in my life has been redecorating my bedroom. Mostly just decorating it because it was never really decorated to begin with. The bedspread you see here was a wedding gift (3.5 years old – don't hate it, don't love it), the lamps were on clearance, and the banner you see was a lazy Sunday craft project.

Before:

Not the most coordinated or even slightly appealing in any way. Mike and I agreed that when he started his summer internships and making a few more dollars, I could decorate the bedroom, and voila!

After:

A bed-in-a-bag that included curtains, nightstands and wall décor from Hobby Lobby and a couple of lamps from Wal Mart and we have a new bedroom! I love it and can’t wait to make the bed every morning, which is something I’ve never before experienced. It feels like a whole new place and I can’t believe I used to live in the icky purple room above. I even feel slightly embarrassed showing you just how unsightly my old room was.

Installing the curtain rod was the hardest part because I had to drill through cinder block and I didn’t really know how to use our power drill. I had the drill set on the backward setting and tried with all my might to push that silly drill bit into the wall. My brute strength made everything possible, but it sure was easier when I figured out what I was doing and put the drill on the regular setting.

I also made Muddy Buddies today. I think they have made it into my top 15 of Laken's favorite foods.

1. Yogurt, Berries, Cottage Cheese - All mixed together

2. Grandma Stewart's Strawberry Shortcakes

3. Marble Cupcake from Sweet Tooth Fairy

4. Bacon

5. Air-popped Popcorn

6. Strawberries

7. Rice Pudding

8. Spinach Salad

9. Grapes

10. Brown Rice

11. Iced Oatmeal Cookie from Sweet Tooth Fairy

12. Mango Salsa

13. Muddy Buddies

14. Waffle Crisp with Whole Milk

15. Peanut Butter S'mores Pizza from Malawi's.

I can’t remember the last time I made them before, but I’ve been in a Muddy Buddy-making spree the past week. Love you, delicious Muddy Buddies, love you. Welcome to the top 15.

Birthday Spoils

The big 2-5. A quarter of a century. I can feel that many good things will happen while I’m 25. The first thing that comes to mind is no more young driver fee at car rentals, but also Mike will graduate from law school while I'm 25. We will become real people. Exciting!

My first day of 25 started out great, mostly because I had a whole day to be with Mike. He was so willing to do whatever I wanted. Little did he know the requests would start at 4 a.m.

Here's how it started. Mike has turned me into a monster. We had a fan during the summer two years ago to try and keep things at a moderate temperature while we slept. (Wymount does not have air conditioning, but with a combination of a window unit and strategically placed fans, it’s not so bad.) He begged me to keep it going throughout the year because he liked the white noise going on and he said it helped him sleep better. I acquiesced because it didn’t bother me. Two years later, the night before my birthday to be exact, that trusty Wind Machine finally gave out. It had been running night and day since that summer of 2010, so we were pleased with its performance. However, I have now become completely dependent upon it for my own sleeping needs. It was too quiet and I simply couldn’t sleep. I kept being woken up by the slightest real or perceived sound. I couldn’t take any more of it come 4 a.m., and proclaimed I was going to Wal Mart to get a replacement. Mike came with me, which was very sweet of him, and we had quite a pleasant trip to the store. I even found me a shirt that I loved for $1! Plus we got an exact replica of our beloved Wind Machine. I was then able to sleep until 9:00 and felt very good about our early morning errand.

Our day together was nothing crazy or extraordinary, but I loved every moment. We just got to be with each other. It really was heaven. First we went on a walk together, enjoying the wonderful sunshine and pleasant temperature. Then we went to Paradise Bakery to eat some scrumptious cookies and delicious molasses bread. Then Mike took me to pick up one of my birthday presents. He took me to Runner’s Corner to pick out a new pair of running shoes. If you have not heard of Runner’s Corner, let me tell you about it. They have people who happen to know everything about running there. They watch you run, figure out what problems you have or don’t have (problems to be had in my case), and bring you a dozen pairs of shoes that will correct that problem and make your runs more enjoyable. I ran around that store so many times with so many different pairs of shoes on. It took quite a bit of time to discover the right pair, but I loved every minute of it. The hard part was not caring about how the shoe looked. I have never done that before! There was an adorable pair of pink Sauconys that I would have picked for sure, but this pair of Brooks were the ultimate victors. We have become best friends.

Next we went to Sweet Tooth Fairy to pick up a couple of glorious cupcakes to serve as my birthday cake. I grabbed my favorite Marble and Mike was feeling adventurous and got a Churro cupcake. It had a real Churro sticking out of the top. Very fun. Then we went home to open presents because we both simply couldn’t wait any longer. Mike was so good to me and on top of the running shoes got me a pink Swiss Army Knife (I had one before, but it mysteriously disappeared from off my keychain – I do not blame whoever stole it – it is essential to living), a 10-pound kettlebell to help me increase my sweating in my favorite exercise video, Elnet – a fancy hairspray I’ve always wanted to try, a Nalgene bottle I‘ve wanted since my last large bottle broke two years ago, makeup brushes, a mall gift card (YAY!), a subscription to Lucky Magazine (LOVE!), Modern Family Season 1 (may or may not have been a present for Mike as well – we both love that show incredibly), and last but not least – Never Say Never – the Justin Bieber movie. Oh, how I love that show. I was not a giant Justin fan before I saw it, but now I cannot get enough of that adorable, little Canadian boy. I’ve watched it twice since my birthday. I think Mike only bought it because he knew he wouldn’t be around to be forced to watch it as well. All of these gifts were so thoughtful! Stuff I really, really, really wanted and didn't even explicitly tell him either! I have such a sweet, thoughtful husband.

After the giant present palooza, we decided we were still kind of full from Paradise Bakery and eating 2 additional Paradise cookies each, so we decided to go wash Steadman, our beloved Buick. Mike will only take him to what he considers the finest carwash in the valley, Supersonic in Orem. We got Steadman looking stellar and headed back home to make some waffles and strawberry goo (just blended up strawberries) with whipped cream. Delicious! We then ate our cupcakes while we had a Modern Family marathon of glory. You could probably say that was the best birthday ever. Well, maybe if it included Ticket to Ride, my favorite game ever, but I forgot about it! I had made all these plans to make Mike my Ticket to Ride slave for an hour or so. I'm thinking he might have not reminded me of that plan on purpose. Oh well, that gives Mike a way to make my next birthday even better.

You would think the wonderfulness would end, but it did not! Next came family parties, which included beloved mall gift cards, and giant package in the mail, which came full of denim jackets, iTunes gift cards, water bottles, delicious granola, puzzles, and many other assorted, glorious gifts. Then, after that, a delightful afternoon with my dear, dear friend who stuffed me full of my favorite popcorn, cookies, skookies, smoothies and chick flicks. Cupcake keychains and cupcake necklaces soon followed.

What girl could ask for more?

I love being 25.

Fun with Gmas

From left to right, you will see Beetz, Grandma Stewart (my dad’s mom, lovingly called Easiest Grandma by my littlest brother who liked that it only took 3 minutes to drive to her house) and Grandma Andrus (my mom’s mom).

When I invited them to go to Brick Oven with me, they we moderately excited to hang out with Beetz, Mike and me, but when I mentioned that the other Gma would be there too, they each went crazy. They were so excited to see each other.

Grandma Fun Facts:

Gma A played on BYU’s softball team when she went to college.

Gma S is Romanian. I can thank her for my skin that tans so well, but also for the notorious Bluga nose I inherited. It has been watered down by a few genes here and there, but any family member can identify that I belong to the Bluga clan by this prominent feature on my face.

Gma A can crochet, cross-stitch and any other needlepointy art like nobody’s business. She gave each grandkid an amazingly large afghan when they were born. I’ve used mine every winter since I was small and that thing is still in great shape. Thank you Gma A! I love my afghan! Keeps you nice and warm while still letting you skin breathe through the little holes. Pretty yet functional.

Gma S makes the best pies ever. She is legendary. Chocolate is my favorite, but other family members will contend that pumpkin, strawberry-rhubarb or triple layer lemon are the best. However, every pie she makes is wonderfully tasty, no matter what kind it is. The crust is always perfect and it will be my greatest achievement to make one on my own that reaches the amazingness of hers. Beetz and I make a pretty good team when we make pie crusts together. I do all of the mixing of the shortening and flour, while she does all the rolling. I hate the rolling and she hates the mixing, so it all works out well. I’m trying to be brave and conquer the whole task on my own.

Confession: When Mike and I first started dating, we had some of Gma S’s pie laying around at my family’s house. I took him a piece and didn’t claim that I made it, but didn’t correct him when I knew he assumed such. I wanted to impress him! An excellent piece of pie was sure to work in my favor in that area. Did it work? The results would indicate such. Mike proceeded to then tell his grandmother that his new girlfriend is the best pie baker ever. When Mike and I got married, his grandmother said that since I was an expert pie baker, I was assigned to bring “my” glorious pies to Thanksgiving dinner. I can make an ok pie on my own, but nothing like grandma’s. I called Gma S up and asked if she’d help me make a couple of pies to bring to my new in-laws’ Thanksgiving. You can’t leave anything to chance on these occasions! She was wonderful and helped me out. Of course they turned out lovely and I was sure to give her most of the credit. Even though the secret is out of the bag, the Cannon family still requests that I bring the pies to Thanksgiving dinner. Mike, if you ever want to go to your family’s Thanksgiving, we better stick around close to Gma S so she can help me make the pies. No Gma S = no pies for Thanksgiving. I’m bringing cupcakes to Thanksgiving dinner if Gma S can’t help me.

Gma A grew up in Ely, Nevada.

Gma S grew up in Detroit. (Unconfirmed rumors that Gma S's brother was involved in the mafia there. Odds are, probably not, but it's fun to think about anyway.)

Gma A can conquer any puzzle any time. She could probably do one even if all the pieces were flipped of over and you just had the cardboard stuff showing.

Gma S’s diet consists of 98 % junk food. Candy, chips, cookies, cake, pie, anything like that you will find in her pantry. Whenever we go visit, she always has a chip basket ready with nacho cheese to dip it all in, along with dessert for later. She took me out to eat at her favorite Chinese buffet a few weeks ago. I commented on how much I loved the vegetables. She said, “Laken, I can’t remember the last time I even had a vegetable. They’re just so much trouble to cook. I’d much rather eat Fritos anyhow.” The remarkable thing is that this woman is well into her 80s, but she’s still spry as ever, goes walking every day and needs help with very few things around the house. I no longer have any premise or excuse when I tell my future children to eat their vegetables. Apparently you do not need them to help you be healthy or strong or live to a ripe old age. Fritos will do the same thing.

Gma S is a Utah Jazz fan extraordinaire.

There are many more fun and interesting facts about my adorable Gmas. These are just a few.

Most important fact: I love my Gmas.

Things I Adore, Things That Please Me

Since nothing that blogworthy has happened to me lately, I decided to just go ahead and list the things that I love in this life. Most of these items or things are a part of my daily existence, so this will give you a good idea of what my life consists of lately.

My job.

I love PSD. I love it with all of my little heart. I love everything about it. I love the people I work with. I share an office with the most brilliant, stylish, sweet lady in the world. I look forward to going to work each day. Just for example, last week I went to Provo High School. That catering class there was having a dessert contest. Since I know the teacher fairly well, she let me and Beetz, who was tagging along, into the judging room where we had full access to over 75 delightful desserts. So many! As much as we wanted! It was a glorious occasion. Love you, PSD. Love you. While not all of it is filled with cake and cookies, and includes long and sometimes less-than-thrilling Board meetings, I still love that job to pieces. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have it.

See this? Times it by 14. That was my dessert tasting experience. Awesome.

Sweet Tooth Fairy Bake Shop.

While I had a giant debate occurred in my heart just barely, I ultimately decided that Sweet Tooth Fairy (STF) is the winner. For the past 4 months or so, Cocoa Bean Cupcake Café and Sweet Tooth Fairy have been waging a serious battle in my soul. Who deserves my true loyalty? I adore cupcakes. Both sell cupcakes. Both sell really good cupcakes. I own T-shirts from both stores. Multiple. However, upon writing this entry, I know Cocoa Bean does not supply me with the same kind of joy and thrill as does STF. However, I hope you will all be praying for me right now. I am on a cupcake fast. I used to eat at least two or three a week. Not kind to the pocketbook or the waistline. How long will this fast last? Not sure. But I can tell you Mike is much happier, as he does not appreciate the adorable, pint-sized confections like I do, and my jeans fell much happier too. Favorite thing there – very hard decision – the marble cupcake (best of both worlds) and the pumpkin chocolate chip bar. I know I will cry when they take it away, as it is only seasonal.

Books.

Remember the wonderful woman I share an office with? She’s the PSD’s Literacy Specialist, meaning she’s read every book in the world and also owns every book in the world. I wasn’t too big of a reader till I met her. Now she has me with a giant list full of books that I can’t wait to read. Currently, I ‘m stuck on Grapes of Wrath. I say stuck because it isn’t as quick-going or as easy to read as my ultimate faves, Walk 2 Moons or Hunger Games found in the juvenile literature section, like 93% of the books I read. Love those. Could talk all day about those. Hope to own 8 copies of each so I can loan them out to lots of people and share that glory that is in those books. In my defense, my office roommate specializes in those areas. She’s not looking for books for old people, just kids. She used to teach English at Provo High, so she always has teen books on the brain. Not my fault.

Pink Penguin PJ Pants.

This could be my favorite article of clothing that I have ever owned. It is a combination of all things I love. Pink and penguins. I’m cool with pj pants, but I’d honestly rather wear my favorite pair of beautiful brown trousers from Gap that I know I’d covet if I didn’t already own. However, pink penguins would not look very appropriate in a work setting, so if they have to be on pj pants, so be it. My family gave me these last year for Christmas. I try and stay in them as long as possible each morning, and are the first thing to come on my body after work. Nothing beats my pink penguin pj pants.

My Blanket.

Linus and I are kindred spirits. The blanket I own is magical. It knows what temperature I am and therefore acts accordingly. If I’m hot, he feels nice and cool. If I’m only a little cold, he only warms me a little bit. If I’m super cold, he warms me up all the way. I don’t know how this happens or how it works. Mike doesn’t believe any blanket could do that. He even tried it once, but he still said it didn’t work. It could probably be that this blanket and I have been together for a really long time and he just knows me so well. I got him when I was sick in jr. high and my sweet Aunt Sue made it for me because my really old blanket might have repulsed her. I my old blanket from birth and it had Muppet Babies on it. I loved that blanket, but, I will admit, I did look quite ragged. The Muppet Babies on that blanket were not longer recognizable. She gave me this one and we’ve been together going on 12 years now. I’ve been with it 3 times longer than Mike. No wonder he doesn’t understand how magical my blanket is. This blanket has been through everything with me. High school, college, marriage. It’s been around me when I’ve felt the most happy and content, but has also helped soak up and wipe away my tears. He’s been through everything with me. I even took him to Germany to visit my family because I knew I wouldn’t last without it.

I must have this thing to sleep. I like to have at least half of it wrapped around my neck. It sounds dangerous, but that’s how I like it. Sleeping simply doesn’t happen when it’s gone. Vacations are the worst, hence taking it to Germany for two weeks. If it falls off during the night, I somehow notice, grab it, and all is well again. One night, Mike fell asleep before he made it under the covers. He looked cold, so I thought I would be so sweet and put my wonderful blanket on him. Big mistake. I went to bed a while later and attempted to get warm and snuggly with just my sheets. I had to snuggle with something as Mike was asleep and my blanket was elsewhere. During the night I went to snatch if from him because I could not sleep, but couldn’t feel it anywhere, as it must have fallen off him sometime earlier. I didn’t want get out of bed, so I waited and waited to fall asleep. Never happened. After who knows how long, I got out of bed, retrieved it, and was able to fall asleep in no time. This blanket is magical. I have no idea what will happen when he reaches the stage my Muppet Baby one did. He’s already on his way, poor thing. All of the ties have come out, so all of the batting is one corner now. I think this makes my blanket all the more appealing because he is now a pillow AND a blanket. It took a minute to get used to, but he is all the more awesome now.

Kettlenetics.

Michelle Khai and I are best friends. We hang out about twice a week, hopefully. She continually inspires me with her ridiculously defined arms, calves and tummy. While our bodies might look really different, we’re basically the same because we both have the same bangs. She assures me that most of our activities together will “whittle away that muffin top” for sure. I discovered Kettlenetics when I was visiting my family in Germany. My mom always has some sort of new exercise video laying around. I never really cared too much about them until I saw the intriguing kettlebells (originated in ancient Russian Olympic training gyms, in case you were wondering). I was bored one rainy afternoon there and decided to give it a whirl. Loved it. Emailed Mike immediately and begged him to buy me my own set so it would arrive before I got home and I would never have to be without Michelle ever again.

Collective Soul.

Remember that kind-of-rock group that was kind of big in 2001? I love them. I discovered them about 2 years ago. Mike and I were going to go on our first camping trip, which is a story in and of itself. Never go camping in January in Utah. Especially if it is your first time. Just don’t do it. Anyway, we were looking for some music to play during the car ride. Pandora had played a few Collective Soul songs in the past and I gave them a thumbs up. I officially committed and bought 2 songs on iTunes. If Mike had let me play them back to back, over and over, I would have been in heaven. Now, I just can’t get enough of them. Their new stuff, their old stuff, love it all.

Yogurt, Berries, and Granola.

I eat this at least two times a day. I have all the supplies at work and at home. A cup of vanilla yogurt, some spoonfuls of berries, cover the top with granola, and you have a mighty tasty meal. This has now become what was once my pb and j to me. I loved pb and j. I had pb and j for lunch everyday and sometime for dinner for at least 15 years. It pains me to tell you that I don’t appreciate pb and js anymore. This tragedy occurred just a year or two ago. I don’t know what happened. My continual craving simply ceased. It’s not that I hate them, I could eat one just fine. I just don’t crave them anymore. It was really quite sad when it happened. I had no fallback food. Nothing I could count on sounding good when leftovers for dinner did not appeal. Yogurt, berries and granola have now filled that void for me.

Sticky Notes.

At I work I am a sticky note fiend extreme. They are everywhere. In different colors. In different sizes. On everything. My computer, my desk, my window, my lamp, my desk phone and my cell phone. I wouldn’t get a single thing done if it weren’t for those glorious, little inventions. One says ‘Please exercise when you get home.” Another says, “Remember the newsletter you send out ever term? Don’t forget to do that.” Things I am bound to forget if I don’t have it staring at me all day. Most of them are work related, but one or two are bound to have things that that I need to buy at the grocery store that week that popped into my head while I was typing up a news release or something. Sticky notes have saved me my job, my household and my sanity. Thank you 3M.

MAC Makeup.

All of the ladies at work use MAC. They always look fabulous. I had an eyeshadow from MAC when I was in high school, but never really used it because I didn’t want to wear make up back then. I was a hobo, despite my best friend’s gentle suggestions (sorry and thank you to Brianne who never gave up on me). It wasn’t until I entered Miss Salem that I discovered what a little blush, mascara and shadow could do for a girl. I never looked back after that. Doing my make up is now my favorite part of my morning, after eating my yogurt, berries and granola. It is especially fun now because I know it’s still going to be there after lunch. Before, that was not how things went. It wasn’t like I rubbed my face all day either. My old makeup would simply vanish, dissolve, dissipate, leaving me very frustrated and gross-looking. MAC, however, not the case. That stuff stays put all stinking day! Miracles! My life has never been better since I discovered MAC. The downside is the price, of course. I have a list as long as the Great Wall full of eyeshadows, lip gloss, brushes, primer, mascara, bronzers, and other make up necessities. My Laken Fund, my allotted monthly allowance, can only handle a couple eyeshadows and a lip gloss each time, so it’s going to take me quite a while to get to the stage where I feel fully stocked, but I’ll get there someday.

Mike.

Last, but definitely most fave = Mike. I love that boy. He’s my favorite part about my life. While it is very normal to only see him for dinner and about an hour after, including most Saturdays and Sunday, I’m always so excited to see him and relish the time we have together. That boy works so hard. I admire him so much for his dedication. He hasn’t slept in for years. He puts in an average of 16 hours a day at the library. He still is magically able to do everything though. He manages his demanding church calling, and still cleans and bathroom every week. In case you didn’t know, cleaning the bathroom is the worst chore in my mind. I don’t know what happened when I was kid, but have always hated it. I think it was because my parents always made me do it. For a long time I think it was because they never let me switch off with my younger sister. They said I did a much better job than she did, and therefore I was ordered to do it more. The unfairness of the situation made me despise the job, and I don’t think I ever got over it. Eventually she was put into the rotation, but the damage had already been done. Mike is always so willing to do it, and he doesn’t even mind! Thank you, Mike for always cleaning the bathroom. You have no idea how much it means to me. I know he always tries his best to make me happy every single day. You know, I’m not sure that Mike has ever had a bad day. While I’m sure things have gone wrong for him, it never really gets him down and he does whatever he can to make sure everything is going well for me and does anything he can to make it even better. He endures the decorative pillows on the couch, the strange order in which I must have laundry folded, and the inordinate amount of time I spend in the bathroom. He is so good at complimenting whatever I make for dinner. He always makes me feel really good about my blossoming cooking skills, which gives me the confidence to be brave and try new things. He is so good about making our Friday night dates sacred and letting nothing get in the way of those. He always tells me I’m pretty even when I feel I am not. Even though he has mountains of homework to push through, he’ll often text me during the day just to say hello and that he loves me. Those are just few of the reasons why Mike is the best husband a girl could ever dream of, and I love him to pieces. Thank you for being mine, Mike. I love you.
